Bulletin details
...The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Flood Advisory for the following rivers in North Carolina... Pigeon River above Old River Rd (NC 215), 1 SW Canton affecting Haywood County. .Heavy rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias will result in excessive runoff and significant rises on streams within the upper Pigeon River watershed. Rainfall will develop overnight tonight, intensify during the day on Saturday, and maintain intensity overnight Saturday before tapering off by early Sunday morning. Storm-total rainfall of 4-9 inches is expected, with isolated 10-11 inches possible, across the upper Pigeon River watershed, generally upstream of Canton. The highest totals will occur along the Pisgah ridge and in the Shining Rock and Middle Prong Wilderness areas within the headwaters of the east and west forks of the Pigeon River, respectively. While there continues to be some uncertainty regarding the timing and amounts of the heaviest rainfall, there is enough confidence in the current forecast that out-of-bank conditions are likely for the Pigeon River. Therefore, a River Flood Advisory has been issued for the reach near Canton, with a crest above Action Stage expected Sunday morning. A rise above Action Stage will result in nuisance, relatively shallow flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to the Pigeon River, including farmland, woodlands, low-lying secondary roads, greenways, parks, and other flood-prone locations. More significant rises along the Pigeon River are possible, and those with interests along the river are encouraged to stay weather aware and up-to-date on the latest stream levels and forecasts at https://water.noaa.gov/wfo/GSP. Current reasonable worst-case scenarios are posted in the ADDITIONAL DETAILS sections below. Forecast crests above Minor Flood Stage may result in the River Flood Advisories being upgraded to River Flood Warnings. * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...Pigeon River at above Old River Rd (NC 215), 1 SW Canton. * WHEN...From this evening to late Sunday night. * IMPACTS...At 8.0 feet, Action/Advisory Stage. Common, nuisance flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to the Pigeon River is beginning. Floodwaters are beginning to impact farmland, woodlands, nurseries, parks, athletic fields, golf courses, greenways, and boat-access areas with up to 2 feet of inundation. Low-water crossings may be inundated with up to 2 feet of floodwater and become impassable. Adjacent campgrounds, mobile home/RV parks, and secondary roads may experience floodwater inundation of up to 1 foot. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... At 11:45 PM EDT Friday the stage was 1.2 feet and steady. Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 8.5 feet Sunday morning. A reasonable worst-case crest above Minor Flood Stage below 11 feet cannot be ruled out. Action/Advisory Stage is 8.0 feet. Minor Flood Stage is 10.0 feet.
