Monitor the weather situation closely and be alert for threatening weather conditions. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. Motorists can expect brief but sudden changes in visibility and ponding of water on roadways as storms move through the area.

At 318 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 5 miles west of Sugarite Canyon State Park, or 7 miles north of Raton, moving southeast at 5 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph and penny size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include... Raton, Sugarite and Sugarite Canyon State Park. This includes the following highways... Highway 64 between Mile Markers 350 and 352. Interstate 25 between Mile Markers 447 and 460.
