HLSBMX This product covers Central Alabama **Isaias continues to move north across Alabama this evening** NEW INFORMATION --------------- * CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS: None * CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS: A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Chambers, Chilton, Clay, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston * STORM INFORMATION: About 190 miles south of Birmingham AL or about 110 miles south of Montgomery AL 30.8N 86.5W Storm Intensity 90 mph Movement North or 5 degrees at 20 mph SITUATION OVERVIEW ------------------ Hurricane Isaias made landfall earlier this evening near Destin, FL with max sustained winds of 105 MPH and a central pressure of 971 mb. The system will gradually weaken as it continues to move north across the state. As it weakens, the wind field will expand, overspreading most of Central Alabama. Winds will gust as high as 50 to 60+ mph late tonight through Saturday, resulting in the potential for widespread downed trees and power lines. Rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts up to 5 inches will result in the potential for flash flooding, especially in urban and other poor drainage areas. Isolated tornadoes may develop across far southeast portions of Central Alabama. POTENTIAL IMPACTS ----------------- * WIND: Potential impacts from the main wind event are now unfolding across southern portions of Central Alabama. Remain well sheltered from dangerous wind having significant impacts. If realized, these impacts include: Some damage to roofing and siding materials, along with damage to porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. A few buildings experiencing window, door, and garage door failures. Mobile and manufactured homes damaged, especially if unanchored. Unsecured lightweight objects become dangerous projectiles. Several large trees snapped or uprooted. Several fences and roadway signs blown over. Some roads impassable from large debris, and more within urban or heavily wooded places. Scattered power and communications outages, but more prevalent in areas with above ground lines. Potential impacts from the main wind event will spread north across Central Alabama. Remain well sheltered from hazardous wind. * FLOODING RAIN: Potential impacts from the flooding rain are still unfolding across southern portions of Central Alabama. Remain well guarded against life- threatening flood waters having extensive impacts. If realized, these impacts include: Major rainfall flooding may prompt many evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may rapidly overflow their banks in multiple places. Small streams, creeks, and ditches may become dangerous rivers. Flood control systems and barriers may become stressed. Flood waters can enter many structures within multiple communities, some structures becoming uninhabitable or washed away. Streets and parking lots become rivers of moving water with underpasses submerged. Driving conditions become dangerous. Many road and bridge closures with some weakened or washed out. Potential impacts from the flooding rain will spread north across Central Alabama. Remain well guarded against dangerous flood waters having additional significant impacts. * TORNADOES: Potential impacts from tornadoes are still unfolding across southeast Central Alabama. Remain well braced against a tornado event having possible limited impacts. If realized, these impacts include: A few places may experience tornado damage, along with power and communications disruptions. Locations could realize roofs peeled off buildings, chimneys toppled, mobile and manufactured homes pushed off foundations or overturned, downed trees, and moving vehicles blown off roads. Elsewhere across Central Alabama, little to no impact is anticipated. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS ---------------------------------- * EVACUATIONS: Follow the advice of local officials. * OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION: Now is the time to stay inside and away from windows. Listen for updates and be ready in case you lose electrical power. Keep a battery- powered radio, charged cell phone and flashlight handy. Keep your cell phone charged and in power-saving mode. If you lose power, use it sparingly and mainly for personal emergencies and check-ins. Do not be a thrill seeker or risk your life for senseless photos or videos. Quickly move to the safest place within your shelter if it begins to fail, preferably an interior room on the lowest floor as long as flooding is not a concern. If a tornado warning is issued for your area, quickly move to the safest place within your shelter. Protect your head and body. * ADDITIONAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION: For information on appropriate preparations see ready.gov For information on creating an emergency plan see getagameplan.org For additional disaster preparedness information see redcross.org NEXT UPDATE ----------- The next local statement will be issued by the National Weather Service in Birmingham AL around 4 AM CDT, or sooner if conditions warrant.
